Championing rare breeds

At The Collective at Woolsery, we’re proud to rear rare-breed animals.

Livestock Manager Chris Jenn and his team do a wonderful job of caring for the rare-breed sheep and pigs we raise on Birch Farm. ‘Our job is to give them the best life possible,’ he says.

Our herd of sheep includes Whiteface Dartmoor, one of Britain’s most ancient breeds, and Greyface Dartmoor – a rare breed that originates here in Devon. The Greyface is hugely prized for its delicious meat which, of course, is why we selected it. ‘Some people call it “angel meat” because it’s so tasty’ says Chris.

Lambing season has been in full swing recently, so now there are lots more Whiteface and Greyface Dartmoors gamboling through our fields. We rear rare-breeds because we believe in continuing the proud farming heritage of Devon, and we rear them slowly so they have a natural life in the outdoors – which shows in the eating.

After a happy life, they make their way to The Farmers Arms where head chef Toby Neal and his kitchen team make the most of this rare-breed ‘angel meat’ turning it into beautiful dishes made from produce grown just a few fields away.
